TRURO, N.S. – Simon Mullen used home course knowledge to capture the U12 division of the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour season-opening event last weekend at Truro Golf Club.

Mullen won the peewee boys division, carding a 36-hole score of 173 (91-82) and finishing five strokes ahead of Blake Fish, of Middle West Pubnico.

The Truro stop was the first of four MJT events being played throughout the region this spring and summer.

Brett LeBlanc of Hammonds Plains was the juvenile boys 15-16 winner and had the low overall score with a two-day total 153 (76-77). He recorded a one-shot victory over Truro’s Owen Mullen (74-80), Dartmouth’s Jake Smith and Nathan Hogan of Derby, N.B.

Owen Mullen’s opening-round 74 was the low round of the tournament.

In the 17-18 junior boys division, Truro’s Connor MacKay (79-79-158) finished second, one shot behind Teran Newell of Barrington.

Other division winners were Gavin Ives (Middle Sackville), 13-14 boys; Abbey Baker (Halifax), U15 girls; and Heather MacLean (Port Williams), 15-18 girls.

The tour’s next event is June 23-24 at Ken-Wo.
