Scammell, Schmitt to lace up for Team Nova Scotia

MONCTON - Julia Scammell and Julia Schmitt are no strangers to the Team Nova Scotia colours.

Scammell, a defenceman in the Nova Scotia Female Midget Hockey League, and Schmitt, a defenceman at Kings-Edgehill, are spending Thanksgiving in search of an Atlatnic Challenge Cup.

The two girls went to school together for three years and played hockey together for four years, before going their separate ways. Last year, they reunited to play for Team Nova Scotia at the Canada Games. They'll get the chance to do it again this weekend.

Last season was a banner year for Scammell, who also attended Hockey Canada's Under-18 strength and conditioning camp. It was the first step in the identification process for future national teams. She was also named top defenceman of the NSFMHL.

So far this season, with her Subway Northern Selects of the NSMFHL, Scammell has two goals and three assists through five games.

Schmitt's season got underway with a tournament at Acadia University earlier this month, and she'll head to Burlington, VT, for the Fall Classic tournament starting Oct. 23.
