The Grade 12 student at South Colchester Academy carded an 18-hole score of 3-over-par 75 to win the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation boys’ championship this week at Paragon in Kingston.

“It was awesome,” said McBurnie, a Brookfield resident who turns 18 on Monday. “It was my last school tournament so I wanted to play well.”

Indeed.

McBurnie shot 37 on the front nine to make the turn at even-par. He shot 3-over 38 on the back and won by two strokes over Liam Parker of Avon View, Millwood’s Chad Wilson and Andrew Cash of Sir John A MacDonald, who all fired rounds of 77.

McBurnie’s round included birdies on the par-4 sixth and par-5 ninth holes. He won among a field of 60 players.

“I’ve just been playing well, hitting the ball well and I just kind of focused in and beared down,” he said.

McBurnie entered the provincial championship after finishing tied for first at the Northumberland regional tournament with Isaac MacNaughton of Cobequid Educational Centre. Both players shot 4-over 75 during that event on Sept. 25 at Truro Golf Club.

McBurnie also won the junior club title at Brookfield Golf Club this summer and finished tied for 25th at the provincial junior tournament at Ken-Wo in July.

MacNaughton finished tied for fifth at high school provincials with a round of 78. Other CEC players in the field were Connor MacKay (87), Carter McNutt (91) and Sam Stoddart (93). SCA’s Ben Fraser shot 97 and teammate Matt Murphy had 98.

Lockview won the team portion of the boys’ event, followed by CP Allen and Horton.

On the girls’ side, Horton’s Sara Cumby and Heather MacLean tied for first place with rounds of 79.

Horton won the team event, followed by North Nova and CP Allen.
