Three Bearcats named to Team MHL South roster

TRURO - The Maritime Junior Hockey League recently finalized its rosters for teams representing the league at the 2016 Eastern Canada All-Star Challenge.

The tournament, set to take place in Cornwall, Ont., Nov. 14-16, will feature two MHL entries, one representing players of the Eastlink North Division and the other, players of the Eastlink South Division.

For the South, Truro Bearcats Shawn Evans is on the coaching staff and three players – netminder Jason Rioux, defenceman Riley Baggs and forward Brandon Hughes – were named to the team.

MHL President Brian Whitehead looks forward to seeing the league showcase its talents at the tournament.

“This region is home to countless talented people within the game,” Whitehead said. “It’s our privilege to present this chance to a few of these players and coaches as well as continue to show to people throughout the hockey world the talent that exists in the MHL.”

This is the MHL’s second appearance in the Eastern Canada Cup. The league sent one team to the event in 2015.

BEARCATS IN THE MIX

SHAWN EVANS – Coach

Evans is in his 16th season as a head coach in the MHL including his 15th with the Bearcats, and has three times been named MHL Coach of the Year. Evans has guided the Bearcats to six league finals, three playoff championships and the 2013 Fred Page Cup Championship.

JASON RIOUX – Goaltender

DOB Dec 5, 1996

In his second MHL season, Rioux ranks fourth in minutes played among MHL goaltenders (786 minutes) while holding a 5-4-4 record, 3.05 GAA and .912 save percentage.

RILEY BAGGS – Defence

DOB May 5, 1997

Baggs has 133 career regular season games with the Bearcats, registering 36 points during that time frame. As a rookie, he helped Bearcats earn a berth in the Kent Cup Final for the third consecutive season in 2015

BRANDON HUGHES – Forward

DOB: Jan 6, 1996

Hughes has 19 points in 17 games with the Bearcats this season and 57 points in 65 MHL regular season games to date.
