Major bantam 'Cats finish regular season with 17 straight wins

TRURO, N.S. – The scorching hot Truro Bearcats collected a pair of wins in the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League over the weekend.

The Bearcats edged the Bedford Barons 3-2 on Saturday and pummeled the Western Hurricanes 8-2 on Sunday.

With the wins, the Bearcats finished the regular season with a league-record 17 straight victories.

On Saturday, Sam Archibald snapped a 2-2 tie with 8:05 left in the third period to lift the Bearcats to victory.

Bryson Currie scored Truro’s other two goals, including a power-play marker, while Nathan Peters had two assists. Oliver Arnfast earned the win between the pipes.

On Sunday, Jacob Melanson scored five goals, including a natural hat trick in the third period, as the Bearcats romped to victory.

Owen Mullen was the playmaker, racking up seven assists, while Currie added two goals and four helpers for a six-point afternoon. Hayden Richardson also had a goal and an assist.

Ben Estell made 18 saves for the W.

There will be six playoff matchups in the NSMBHL. Each series is a best-of-three with each winner advancing to provincials March 22 to 25 on the South Shore.

The Bearcats (28-2-0-3-0) finished second in the regular season, three points behind the first place Gulls. Truro will meet 11th-place Kings Mutual from the Valley in their playoff series. Game 1 will be in the Valley on March 3. Truro will host Games 2 and 3 (if necessary) March 10 and 11.
