Bearcats winless after two games at FPC

TERREBONNE, Que. – Despite a late third-period surge, the Truro Bearcats came up short on Thursday at the Fred Page Cup.

The Bearcats lost 6-4 to College Francais de Longueuil on Day 2 at the Eastern Canadian junior A hockey championship.

Truro is winless after two games at the four-team event. On Wednesday, the Bearcats were thumped 8-2 by the Quebec champion Terrebonne Cobras.

Friday, the Bearcats meet the three-time reigning FPC champion Carleton Place Canadians at 5 p.m. in their final round-robin game.

Longueuil 6, Truro 4

Longueuil led 2-0 after the first period, however, Bearcats captain Kyle Tibbo cut that lead in half with a goal at 3:58 of the second. Maxime Chagnon scored for Longueuil to restore the two-goal cushion at 12:44.

In the third, the Quebec side reeled off three straight goals for a comfy 6-1 advantage with just over nine minutes remaining.

Credit the Bearcats, however, for not quitting. Connor Morrison scored with five minutes left in the game, while Nic Blanchard added another 1:50 later. Morrison scored his second of the game in the dying seconds for the final score.

Bearcats goalie Jason Rioux made 21 saves, while his teammates directed 31 shots at Stefano Cantali. 

Truro went 0-for-5 on the power play.

In the late game Thursday, Terrebonne (1-0) faced off against Carleton Place (0-1).

It was a tough start for the Bearcats on Wednesday against the Quebec champion and host Cobras.

The Bearcats started slow and trailed 4-0 just over five minutes into the contest and 5-1 after the first period.

Tibbo and Zach Moody scored goals for the Bearcats, while Tyler Pyke had two assists. Rioux was peppered with 43 shots.

Special teams played an important role for the Cobras, who scored twice while shorthanded and added two more on the power play. Both shorthanded goals were scored on the same Bearcats’ power play just over two minutes into the game.

In another contest Wednesday, Longueuil edged the Carleton Place 2-1.
