Cougars breeze by Dragons to earn berth in football semi final

TRURO - The CEC Cougars have punched their ticket to the NSSAF Division 1 football semi final, after a 42-6 victory over Lockview High School Dragons Sunday at James MacPherson Stadium.

The Cougars will face Sir John A. Macdonald Flames Saturday in the next stage of the playoffs.

Sunday, CEC led 22-0 at the half. Senior defensive back Tyler Ball led the way with two special team touchdowns.  Ball returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown late in the second quarter and in the second half returned another from 40 yards out.  He also chipped in with five tackles on defence.

The Cougars defence stood strong throughout the day with balanced play across the board. Linebacker Will Sylliboy had two interceptions while Daniel MacKay added another in the fourth quarter.

Offensively, quarterback Dustin Pettigrew was 7-for-13 for 107 yards passing and one touchdown.  Slotback Riley Gabriel hauled in four catches for 63 yards, including a TD catch of 30 yards. Riley Gabriel also carried the ball seven times for 29 yards and one rushing touchdown. Running Back Kamryn Matheson had 11 carries for 40 yards and two touchdowns. 

Saturday’s game will be hosted by the Flames and is scheduled for 1 p.m., with the field still to be determined.
