SYDNEY — Sydney-Whitney Pier MLA Gordie Gosse has announced that he has been diagnosed with cancer.

The Nova Scotia New Democratic Party released a statement today on Gosse's behalf. He is not available to talk to the media. He did not specify the form of cancer he has.

In the statement, Gosse said that he received his diagnosis late last week.

"Like hundreds of other Nova Scotians I am nervous and scared about the fight I am about to embark on," Gosse wrote. "But it’s a fight I am determined to win."

On Monday, Gosse took part in the annual Day of Mourning ceremony held at the legion branch in Whitney Pier, laying a bouquet of flowers and offering some remarks.

Gosse said that his cancer was diagnosed early and his prognosis is good, but he will be required to undergo chemotherapy and radiation treatments and as a result he will reduce his MLA duties.

"Spending time away from my constituents and my colleagues in the house of assembly will not be easy for me," Gosse wrote. "Everyone from the Pier all the way to Province House knows how much I like to talk. But I owe it to my family, friends and colleagues to get better, and that means listening to my doctors. I trust people will understand my need for privacy during my treatment and recovery."

Gosse said, if things go according to plan, he will back in Province House this fall. He added his office will remain open and his colleagues in the legislature may assist with constituency work.

"The last week has been challenging. I want to thank the many health care workers who have supported me through this difficult time. I’m grateful that I live in a province with an excellent health care system," Gosse wrote.

"I’ve always lived by the motto when you get knocked down get right back up. Rest assured I’m already on my feet, my cancer is treatable and I’ll be seeing everyone again soon."
