Late push by Truro enough to top Pictou County

NEW GLASGOW – Pictou County fell out of top spot in the MHL Thursday night as the Truro Bearcats defeated them 4-3 at the Wellness Centre.

Weeks Crushers forward Tyler Doyle tries to break past Truro Bearcats defenceman Jordan MacNaughton during MHL action at the Pictou County Wellness Centre last night. Pictou County fell 4-3 to Truro.

Both teams are tied with 60 points, but Truro has 29 wins compared to the Crushers 27. The win by the Bearcats also tied the season series between the two teams 3-3.

In the first period Truro got in early penalty trouble with Daniel Perigo taking a hooking penalty 22 seconds into the game. With the Crushers on the power play Phillip Fife took a cross-checking penalty in front of the Bearcats goal.

On the two-man advantage Mitchell Deruelle found the back of the net to put Pictou County ahead 1-0.

After the Fife penalty expired John Mullally would give Weeks a two-goal lead firing the puck on goal from the sideboards and beating Chris Festarini.

Just under two minutes later Jacob Smith would get Truro on the board, cutting the Pictou County lead to one.

He would also be the one to tie things up heading into the first intermission. Just 44 seconds into Evan MacEachern’s holding penalty he capitalized for the Bearcats as the puck slid past Brandon Thibeau with 6:02 remaining in the first.

Neither team scored in the second period.

It wasn’t until the 9:19 mark that Pictou County took the lead again. Daniel MacLeod broke down the right side, cutting below the goal line before throwing it out front to Garrett Holmes who beat Festarini.

Just a minute later the Bearcats got some luck as the puck bounced up in the air from behind the net and into the crease area as Denver Lynds pushed the puck home to tie the game 3-3.

Perigo gave the Bearcats their first lead of the game with 5:48 left in the third, which they held onto to win 4-3.

Thibeau made 42 saves in the Pictou County loss, while Festarini made 37 in the Truro win.

The Crushers are off tonight before travelling to Amherst to face the Ramblers, who currently sit third in the Eastlink Division. This season the Crushers are 3-1-1 against Amherst in five meetings. Including Saturday night they have three more games with their division rivals.
