Halifax Regional Police responded to a break and enter in the 0-100 block of Bonita Drive in Dartmouth early Sunday morning where they found a 75-year-old homeowner suffering severe facial injuries after being allegedly hit over the head by two men with his own rifle before they fled with the weapons.

“It does not happen very often,” Const.Pierre Bourdgaes, police spokesman, said Tuesday about robberies aimed at residents with firearms.

On Monday morning police say an anonymous person phoned with a tip, which led officers to find a gun inside an apartment in the 2400 block of Gottingen Street in Halifax.

Police also arrested a suspect in the 5500 block of Bloomfield Street after finding a loaded handgun from the break and enter.  Officers then went to the 100 block of Lacewood Drive where another suspect was arrested after being seen carrying firearms wrapped in a blanket.

“That’s what broke the case,” Bourdages said. “That led us to both the first weapon and the first suspect.”

Tyrone Nelson Francis, 20, of Timberlea was held in custody overnight and faces over a dozen charges including attempted murder, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, and break and enter to steal a firearm.

Eliahs Knudsen Kent, 22, of Halifax was also held in custody and faces most of the same charges.

Bourdages said police are investigating how the suspects knew there were weapons in the Dartmouth home.
