Taking part in the cutting of the ribbon at the Rath EastLink Community Centre were, from left; Truro Deputy Mayor Greg Mac Arthur, Truro-Bible Hill-Salmon River-Millbrook MLA Lenore Zann, Cumberland Colchester MP Scott Armstrong, Truro Mayor Bill Mills, Colchester County Mayor Bob Taylor, Hants East MLA and Deputy Speaker in the House of Assembly Margaret Miller, MC for the ceremony and fundraising committee chairman Jon Stanfield and Colchester County Deputy Mayor Bill Masters.

The ceremony took place in the facility Saturday morning, with members of the Truro Elementary School Choir opening things by singing O Canada.

Fundraising committee chairman for the centre Jon Stanfield greeted everyone and a few short speeches were made.

Cumberland Colchester MP Scott Armstrong urged everyone to make use of the facility.

“I toured the facility and I see this morning it’s getting lots of use,” said Margaret Miller, Hants East MLA and Deputy Speaker in the House of Assembly. “This is a testimonial to what a community can achieve when people work together.”

Truro Mayor Bill Mills stressed the importance of collaboration between local communities, individuals and businesses in the efforts to construct the facility.

“It’s proof of what can be achieved through cooperation,” added Colchester County Mayor Bob Taylor. “We’ve proven that we can attract and host major events and everyone has been doing a great job.”

Rob MacIntosh, of Truro, is one of the residents who has been taking part in activities at the centre with his family.

“We usually swim once a week,” he said. “I come with my girls who are 12 and seven. We used to swim at Centennial Pool before and it’s nice to have a pool that’s warm, although I’m not sure why my seven year old can’t use the pool due to her height.

“We’ve tried the rock wall as well. It was fun but hard work. It gave us a good workout.

“The centre is certainly a nice addition to Truro.”
