Raechelle Lindsay, left, and Ashley MacDonald look through one of the scrapbooks from a previous year of the Girl Power Camp offered through the Central Nova Women's Resource Centre. The two are co-ordinating the camp again this year, which will be offered in five locations in Colchester County.

"Our focus is to build self-esteem," said Raechelle Lindsay, who is working with co-ordinator Ashley MacDonald to offer three-day camps in five areas this summer. "In teenaged years, research shows that a female's self-esteem and confidence drops greatly. We're hoping to build up that strength and confidence early on.

"The age group this camp targets is one where the girls are just building their own identity," added MacDonald.

The three-day camps are being offered in Truro, Brookfield, Tatamagouche, Great Village/Bass River, and Bible Hill/North River. Cost is $25 per child per camp.

MacDonald and Lindsay said camps will have a focus on the history of women. For example, during the science day, participants will learn about female scientists from the past and present.

"We're also incorporating a memory box this year, where the girls will decorate the outside with words on how people see them, and on the inside with words on how they see themselves," said MacDonald. "It's very symbolic."

She said the box will be a keepsake for the girls, and the plan is to have notes included daily on their strengths and positive attributes with friends including some as well.

"We want their friends to write something positive as well - not ‘pretty' or ‘nice' - those are great, but we're looking for inner qualities," Lindsay noted.

MacDonald said girls are often surrounded by stressful situations while growing up, and the box can be a daily reminder of their positive qualities they can reflect on.

The camp will also touch on a social media topic, and the unrealistic expectations that are placed on girls today.
