An effort is under way in Truro to raise money and grocery donations for the Colchester Food Bank prior to Thanksgiving.

The Truro Mall has teamed up with the food bank and Green Diamond Equipment in an effort to raise both $1,000 and 1,000 lbs. of food by Wednesday.

Called the Big Truro Mall Give, the effort will see the mall donate $1 (up to a maximum of $1,000) for every pound of food donated to the cause.

“But, we need the public’s help to do that,” said  Janet Carrigan, senior property manager at the mall.

A John Deere tractor and wagon, provided by Green Diamond Equipment, has been placed in the mall as a collection site for the food donations.

Momentum has been building for the effort but greater public assistance is required to meet the two goals.

“We have had a ton of engagement on social media about the Big Give, but we need to continue to get the word out … on this fun challenge,” said food bank lead coordinator Darlene DeAdder.

“A monetary donation of $1,000 would be so crucial around this time of year and would be used to purchase perishable food items for Thanksgiving weekend,” she said.

Anyone interested in supporting the food drive, and assisting in reaching the $1,000 goal, can drop non-perishable food items to the John Deere tractor/wagon located beside the food court in the mall prior to Oct. 3. More information is located at truromall.ca.
