Chignecto-Central Regional School Board will begin its “home to
school communication system” in September. During a committee of the whole school board meeting in Truro this week, an education services report described the “alert” system as a “high efficient notification system that uses voice, SMS text and email” to improve communication.
The school board said there are many benefits to the initiative, including students being accountable for their attendance, parents being informed of their children’s attendance, schools will have a better way of broadcasting emergency situations in a timely manner. Other expected improvements include increased contact methods, expanding the number of people who can be reached and easier mass communication across the school board.
The school board confirmed that all boards in Nova Scotia will use the new system. For CCRSB, the cost will be a licensing fee, equal to $1 per student.
Cobequid Educational Centre in Truro has been one of a few sites that used the program as a pilot project. Susan MacQuarrie, the school board representative for Truro, said the system “seems to work well.”
