RCMP officer Jody Allison is on the stand. The video of his interview with Garnier at the Sackville detachment on Sept 15, 2015 was played. The video will continue playing after lunch break. In the interview Allison tells Garnier "you're a good guy. Something happened. Something went sideways." Garnier starts sobbing. Allison speaks in a reassuring tone, telling the court that he wants to build a relationship with his suspect. He talks about how cellphone records and security cameras can track a person's movement through the city, among other things.
The murder trial for Christopher Garnier who is charged with second degree murder in the death of off duty Truro police officer Catherine Campbell resumed Monday in Halifax.
First witness on the stand was Halifax Regional Police officer Andre Habib. He examined pictures of the white Ford Edge seized by police and photos of items such as a gas can, green tarp and gloves.
A passport with Garnier's name, lipstick and playing cards with messages written on them were also seized by police. Photos of the seized vehicle and 5714 McCully were identified.
Habib said that as far as he knew, Campbell's cellphone was not located but police did examine her clothing. A black and silver dress, white bra and a hair clip belonging to Campbell were shown in court. A light blue t-shirt from Garnier with the word 'Aeropostale' was also shown. Habib was shown a security camera video of a male walking near Agricola Street. He said that the t-shirt pattern and placement "appeared to be similar."
Under cross-examination by defence lawyer Joel Pink, Habib said he did not know who the fingernails found at the scene belonged to. Pink also questioned whether a bar bracelet recovered from the scene was indeed from the Alehouse.
Two boxes of Cipralex belonging to Garnier was shown. The Ford gas gauge was checked and found to be nearly empty. A backpack of clothes, a stove and sleeping bag were also taken by police. When questioned by Pink, Habib didn't know whether or not Garnier had recently gone camping.
