A tragic love story will take place once again in Victoria Park.
The Truro Theatre Society and Truro-Bible Hill-Salmon River-Millbrook MLA Lenore Zann brought to life Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in the park the past two nights. Thursday night’s show is the last performance. Tuesday night’s live theatre drew an estimated crowd of about 300 people, who raved about the production.
“They look really realistic and it's very good. I hope they do more of these," said Truro’s Nathan Borden.
Michelle McCann was also impressed with the production, which features the longstanding feud between the Montague and Capulet families. However, in this version, the families are Acadian and British, and it’s set in Cobequid in the 1750s before the Acadians were deported.
“It’s fantastic. It’s great to see local people involvement, and all ages too. Not everyone would get to see something like this otherwise,” said McCann. “It’s a different way to get people out and is very unique.”
Zann told this paper the effort has more than met her expectations.
“I’m extremely proud … the costumes, fight scenes, singing, dancing and acting … it’s all been great. It’s a free experience everyone can enjoy and whole families were there,” Zann said. “And they got the story; even the kids were laughing and crying when they should be.”
Thursday’s production begins at 7 p.m. in the park. Show-goers will see five different stages, set in various areas of the park including the bandshell, stone hut, monument stone, by the pool and nearby bridge, stone wall and barbecue pavilion. If it rains, it will be held at the Nova Scotia Community College’s auditorium in Truro.
Zann expects to bring Shakespeare in the Park back next year.
“People are now saying, ‘you have to make this an annual thing,’” Zann said. “This is something Truro can become known for.”
