The Truro Farmers' Market will celebrate Farmers' Market Week on Aug. 2 and 9.

TRURO - The role farmers' markets play in communities throughout Nova Scotia and the benefits they provide will be on display beginning this weekend.

The third annual Farmers' Market Week takes place Aug. 2 to 9 with various activities lined up at markets across the province, including the Truro Farmers' Market.

"It's just an opportunity to celebrate everything about the markets," said Jamie Alcorn, Truro Farmers' Market manager. "They're a great venue in a town. Nova Scotia actually has the most markets per capita in the country."

Celebrating local farmers and craftspeople fit in with the theme of the week, said Alcorn, who added supporting the local economy and developing partnerships within the community are also highlights of the weeklong event.

In addition to regular vendors at Saturday's Truro market, the day will include an animal display, pony rides, face painting, a ‘chalk the block' contest and the music of Gordon Tucker.

"Last year was my first year here, and people loved it," Alcorn said of the event. "It was really busy on the front lawn and it was a lot of fun. It drew people here who maybe hadn't been here before."

Also on Saturday, the market will celebrate Food Day Canada - a national initiative in praise of farmers, fishers, chefs, home cooks and researchers.

In honour of Food Day Canada, the local market will run a contest in which people are encouraged to submit a dinner menu using market ingredients.

"It's just kind of fun to get people thinking about how to use market food," said Alcorn. "It's fun to see people's creativity with how they would use the resources that are right in their community."

On Aug. 9, the Truro market will celebrate agriculture with a ‘Look at the Past.' Displays will include the Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition Farm Equipment Museum, Colchester Historical Museum and the Colchester-East Hants Regional Library.
