TRURO – The ability to take a leisurely stroll in a park would be an enviable activity for some people coping with mobility issues.
Dick Cotterill, a Truro businessman, found himself in that position following recent surgeries and began thinking of ways to improve transportation in the area for both locals and visitors by offering guided tours on Segways.
“What caught my interest more than anything is, I have a new artificial hip and rebuilt knee and I can’t walk around Victoria Park anymore,” said Cotterill. “But I sure can enjoy it on a Segway.”
Cotterill recently received approval from the provincial government to offer a pilot Segway program from his business, McGinleys Yard and Garden Equipment Inc., located at 184 Arthur St.
Truro was one of three communities in the province to receive approval to test the self-balancing, lithium-ion battery powered, two-wheeled, personal transportation devices for use on streets and sidewalks.
“We were pleased to be approved by the province to participate in the two-year Segway pilot project,” Cotterill said. He added the aim of the project is to evaluate Segways and their sustainability in the province’s transportation system.
Feedback from the program will be reviewed to determine whether amendments will be made to the Motor Vehicle Act to permanently allow Segway use.
The business owner said Segways are very pedestrian friendly and have a maximum speed of 20 kilometers per hour.
“They are a very environmentally friendly mode of transportation.”
People wanting to experience a Segway ride are invited to take a guided tour from the business, located near the corner of Arthur and Young streets, along Brunswick Street to Victoria Park, around designated park areas and back to the store.
Tours cost $39 for an hour and $59 for an hour-and-a-half, and both tours also include a 30-minute pre-tour lesson on the use of Segways.
Cotterill said the addition of Segways was a natural fit for his business.
“We already sell and service lithium-ion battery powered lawn equipment and that’s what these things are,” he said.
“This will be our first venture outside yard and garden equipment.”
