TRURO – Investigation into the cause of a fire at a business on Inglis Place was ongoing Friday.

According to Truro Fire Chief Blois Currie, a fire call regarding smoke coming from the basement of The Loft Cabaret/Railyard Pub on Thursday evening in downtown Truro was believed to be electrical in nature.

“We were back there (Friday) morning,” Currie told the Truro Daily News. “Electricians were in there tracing wires to see where the electrical issue was. We feel it’s an electrical problem … we just have to find out what the cause was.”

The call came in around 7 p.m. and forced the evacuation of staff and customers from the Railyard Pub. Currie confirmed on Friday that the establishment did not sustain fire damage, “just smoke in the basement.”

Truro police blocked off traffic on the Esplanade from Forrester to Havelock streets on Thursday night, while a portion of Inglis Place was also closed.

About six customers and four staff members from the Railyard Pub stood across the street from the business as firefighters entered the building.

“Our beer is in there, man,” said one customer, while his buddy added, “It’s priority number one,” as he ate chicken wings while using a flower bed as a makeshift table.

Blois said firefighters combed the basement of the adjoining buildings on Thursday night, “to make sure we don’t have any fire extension, or anything like that.

“We want to make sure that before we leave it we have everything covered.”
