TRURO – The boys are officially back in town.
Filming for Season 9 of the Trailer Park Boys is underway, with characters and crew spending most of their day Wednesday outside the Truro Police Service.
“It is wonderful to be back in Truro,” said Mike Smith, who plays the popular kitty-loving Bubbles in the series. “Last year, we had a great time in Truro. Everyone in town was awesome to us and very hospitable. All the filming turned out great and that (expletive) is coming out in September.”
While they spent time in and around the police cells, the boys – including Robb Wells as Ricky and John Paul Tremblay as Julian – will once again bring Sunnyvale to Bible Hill Estates trailer park in Bible Hill.
“It’s a great park. It looks great and is laid out exactly the way we need it to be,” said Smith. “It’s nice to get back here. We’re planning on filming several more seasons. Ideally we’d like to build our own trailer park, but I think we’ll be back in Truro.”
A casting call went out last week for the new season, which will also feature all the other regulars – Randy, Lahey, Lucy, Cory and J-ROC.
“In this season, Ricky becomes a grandfather,” said producer Gary Howsam. “He handles it in typical Ricky fashion – he’s enthusiastic but not particularly capable.”
The casting call included the newborn baby, but it also searched for seniors for yoga and bowling scenes.
“The seniors will be coming in to participate in park activities,” Howsam said, adding he didn’t want to divulge too much information as to what viewers might expect for the ninth season.
Along with the police station and trailer park, filming will be done at other locations throughout the area, including Victoria Park.
“Victoria Park is new to us, which would be fun,” the producer said.
Having spent most of last summer filming in the area, Howsam said residents were welcoming.
“We just loved it here last year. People were awesome to us. The Bible Hill park was perfect and it’s a great location with some nice people. Hopefully we don’t irritate them too much – we try to keep it to a bell roar,” he said.
During filming on Wednesday, four teenagers were ecstatic to catch a glimpse of Ricky when he came out to sit in his infamous vehicle.
“This is the best day of my life,” said Nathan Brent, just after asking Ricky for a quick photo. “That’s my new Facebook profile picture.”
Filming this time around will be spread over about seven weeks.
When asked how excited he was to be working on Season 9, director Ron Murphy didn’t mask his excitement.
“Oh my God, are you kidding me? I am over the moon,” he said while taking a break between scenes. “It’s not work to do this show. It’s a joy to come to work and do this.”
Although he’s excited to be working with the cast and crew again, he said how it will air is also playing on the excitement.
“The Trailer Park Boys is the first Netflix original to be made in Canada, and that’s huge international recognition for the show,” he said about the series being broadcast exclusively on Netflix.
“The boys are at the top of their game. They’ve been doing this for so long that it just comes naturally to them. They are absolutely master comic writers and performers.
“There is a lot of laughter on set, a lot of good vibes, and a lot of fun. It makes for a great life.”
At the same time as filming the series, Jeremy Chipper of SwearNet.com was on site to capture shorts for the exclusive website.
