TRURO – Demolition is underway to remove the former Truro junior high on Victoria Street.
Work began Monday at the downtown site and is expected to continue for at least another day.
The first classes were held at the Victoria Street school in September 1939. It was originally a Grade Primary to 9 school before becoming a junior high for grades 7 to 9 in 1957.
The 40,120-square-foot building is located on a 60,700-square-foot lot.
The building has been vacant since the new Truro Junior High School opened in September 2004 near the top of Young Street.
The town awarded a tender earlier this year to remove and dispose contaminated materials and to demolish the former school to Dexter Construction for $269,000 plus tax.
