Porn Diet Talks being held in Truro

Porn addiction is on the rise in Nova Scotia, and one group feels the topic is lacking discussion.

To shine a light on the impact porn addiction can have on people’s lives, a group of mental health professionals are hosting a series of public presentations called The Porn Diet Talks across the province, including a stop in Truro.

Being held at the Colchester-East Hants Public library on Wednesday, the presentation will discuss the rise of problematic porn use and how people can get help if they are dealing with porn addiction.

“In our line of work we have seen an increasing number of people who struggle with problematic use of pornography,” said Michael Hennessey, a psychologist with the NSHA’s Mental Health and Addictions system.

“We are aware problematic use of porn can also have significant impacts on the brain, the body and relationships. We thought it was important to create more awareness on the issue, specifically on how it can impact a person’s life.”

With the wider availability of online porn, porn addiction has become more prevalent in society, but a lack of discussion has made the issue almost taboo, something Hennessey hopes to change.

“We are hoping to attract everyone in the community to our discussion,” he said.

“We hope people develop a greater awareness of the impact problematic use of pornography can have on a persons life. We hope if people are experiencing these issues or have a loved one experiencing these issues, they will leave knowing about resources they can turn to.”

The group conducted research into porn statistics while developing the presentation, and found that porn isn’t only affecting adults.

“Pornography use is happening at a younger age now,” said Hennessey.

“We look at and present a few different stats in our presentation and there is one in particular that shows 48 per cent of males are exposed to pornography before they are 13 years of age.

“We also found the average adolescent male will have viewed 1,400 porn acts before his first sexual encounter.”

Hennessey said the reason kids are being exposed to porn at a younger age is due to the wider freedom they have online and the access they have through their phones and tablets.

Porn addiction can also impact a person’s sexual functioning, and rates of erectile dysfunction have increased drastically since 2006, around the same time online streaming porn became widely available, said Hennessey.

While porn addiction can have serious impacts on people’s lives, it can also be beneficial when used in the right situation.

“A lot of it is about moderation and making smart choices,” said Hennessey.

“We’re not saying all pornography is bad. Were just focusing on the problematic use of pornography.”
