2018 marks Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colchester’s 40th anniversary, and to celebrate, some special events are being planned.
To show the community how much we’ve appreciated their support over the years, and how much the children, youth and families of Colchester County mean to our agency we are adding some events to the calendar.
On June 29 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre (RECC), Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colchester will be hosting “Kids Day Out at the RECC.” This is a free event and open to all families in Colchester. Pizza will be offered to students who bring their report cards. Kids will be able to enjoy many aspects of the RECC facility during the event. The rock wall and swimming pool will both be open for the celebration. There will also be fun activities for children and youth set up in the arena, like bouncy castles, Plinko and more.
“We are thrilled to host this free, family event for our community,” said Michelle Misener, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colchester. “The team at the RECC has been incredibly supportive of this event from the get-go. We couldn’t imagine a better organization to partner with to offer this fun day to Colchester families.”
For 40 years Big Brothers Big Sisters has been serving children, youth and families in the Colchester area. Over the years thousands of children have been provided with positive role models and friendships and the agency has grown to serve the community in other important ways.
“Over the years our agency has had several fundraisers such as bingo, Bowl for Kids, Traveloto and Big Bucks, just to name a few. It has been the success of our Big Bucks fundraiser that has allowed us to grow in ways we never could have imagined,” said Misener. “The continued support from our community has allowed us to create initiatives like our Helping Others Grant. This grant provides funding to community groups who provide a service that has a significant and positive impact on children and youth in the Colchester East Hants catchment area.”
Due to the success of Big Bucks, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colchester will also be offering free swims at Victoria Park every Thursday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Victoria Park pool, throughout July and August. Like the Kids Day Out event, the free swims are also open to the entire community.
Misener, who will be retiring in the fall after 35 years as the executive director, hints at a major project currently in the works that will position the agency well going forward. Exciting news regarding the plan will be revealed during the next few months as details are confirmed.
“It’s rewarding to reflect on how much we’ve been able to accomplish since we began in 1978,” said Misener. “With the continued support from our community, dedicated staff, invested board members, and all our other incredible volunteers, I believe Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colchester will keep growing and evolving to serve Colchester in new and exciting ways.”
