On April 9 a post on the business’ Facebook page stated. “To all of our wonderful customers old and new, mike and myself would like to let you all know that Sunday April 9 will be our last day of operation. It's time for our family to experience some new adventures. We would like to say thank you to all of you for your support over the years. We will miss you all.”

It added that the business is now for sale.

Many people expressed shock and sadness after reading the announcement, mentioning they had been long-time customers and loved the food. One post stated that when they visited Shillelagh House it was “the first place we had "decent" fish and chips since leaving England.”

In reply to one comment the business owners, Lori and Mike Hingley, said their decision to close was made that week. They offered to meet with people who had purchased gift certificates and provide refunds.
