TRURO – The Cobequid Cougars will have to win a qualifier to get to the NSSAF Division 1 girls volleyball championship.

The Cougars lost the Northumberland Region final 3-1 (19-25, 25-13, 19-25, 15-25) on the weekend to the host Dr. John Hugh Gillis Royals in Antigonish.

The Cougars have yet to hear who they will host in this weekend’s qualifier. The winner moves on to provincials Dec. 3 and 4 at Citadel High School in Halifax.

“In the set we won the girls played the way they are capable,” said coach Bob Piers. “But unfortunately we didn’t play that way in all four sets.

“We didn’t serve tough enough and we didn’t attack them enough and if you’re not attacking a team like that enough they attack you and they’re very difficult to defend against.”

But Piers still feels his team can get to provincials to defend its run of three consecutive titles.

“I think we’re one of the better teams in the province,” he said. “Certainly Antigonish is first or second and it just so happened we had to play them at regionals.

“But there’s two weeks to go and if the girls work hard we’ve got a shot at doing something at provincials.”
