CABINDA, Angola - Togo's team has flown out of Angola, withdrawing from a continent-wide soccer tournament after being the target of an ambush that killed three and injured eight.
As he boarded the plane late Sunday, Togo's captain Emmanuel Adebayor told journalists: "We have to mourn our dead. We go back home to do this."
Players had wanted to stay to compete in honour of their assistant coach, a team spokesman and the Angolan bus driver who died.
They withdrew at the insistence of their country's president and prime minister, who accused the host and organizers of the African Cup of Nations tournament of failing to protect the team after the Jan. 8 attack in Cabinda - the oil-rich region in northern Angola which has seen occasional separatist violence.
