Cobequid breaks goalless tie streak, wins first game of regular season
Cougars score, get a win
TRURO - Kallyn Morgan almost single-handedly got the monkey off the Cobequid Cougars' back.
The sophomore striker fired a pair of goals Tuesday to give the Cobequid Cougars a 2-1 win over the Northumberland Nighthawks in their NSSAF Northumberland Region girls soccer tilt at CEC Field.
The goals were the first of the regular season for the Cougars, who oddly enough had battled to 0-0 ties in all three previous matches.
"It felt really good," Morgan said of scoring the goals. "We were in a little slump for a while and we needed the win to move up in the standings."
The victory gives the Cougars first place in the Northumberland Region ahead of the Nighthawks.
Both of Morgan's tallies came in the first half and were almost carbon copies of one another. She took a pass from a teammate and with a defender on her heels, turned and fired the ball past the keeper.
"I just felt like OK we can do this," Morgan said after netting the first goal.
She said the victory has injected some extra energy into her teammates.
"All the girls were really excited," she said. "We really needed that win both for the standings and our morale."
Through the first three games of the season the Cougars were generating plenty of chances, but lady luck was keeping the ball out of their opponents' nets.
Co-coach Kate Adams said that tenacity was the key to winning Tuesday.
"We challenged the ball in their end enough to make them cough it up and we were able to get a couple goals," she said.
In spite of the victory, Adams said there are still things the Cougars have to iron out.
"We need a little better passing and communication," she said. "But we're happy to get the win and we'll take it."
The Cougars have just two regular season matches remaining, both on the road next week. Tuesday they travel to Antigonish to take on the Dr. John Hugh Gillis Royals, before visiting the North Nova Gryphons Thursday.
In the meantime, Cobequid is competing at a tournament at Acadia University this weekend.
In boys action, the Cougars battled to a 2-2 draw with Northumberland at the Pictou County school. Conrad Yiridoe, on a penalty kick, and Graham MacNevin did the scoring for Cobequid. The Cougars take on South Colchester Academy Friday in an exhibition match at 4 p.m. at CEC.
