TRURO - Noah Patriquin is learning that riding his bicycle is not only fun, but it has a positive impact on his health.
The nine-year-old from Onslow Mountain was one of a few children who joined with a group of adults to participate in the Heartland Tour bike ride Wednesday.
"I like to bike, it's fun ... it's important to stay fit too. If not, you could have a heart attack," said Patriquin, who bikes about four times a week, regardless of weather conditions.
"It wouldn't be very good to have heart problems and I'd be scared ... exercise helps keep you healthy. I'd like to bike forever as long as my heart lets me."
The youngster was one of about 50 people, mostly adults, who participated in the Heartland Tour, a cross Nova Scotia bicycle ride to raise awareness of coronary heart disease and the positive impacts of a healthy lifestyle. Adults biked about 100 km, while children had the option to bike a 20 km distance.
The event was sponsored locally by Hub Cycle.
Patriquin's dad, Shawn, also got involved. He said the event was important to them because his father recently underwent a triple bypass surgery.
"It was scary and emotional and it's good for (Noah) and me to get more information on exercise and heart health," said Shawn.
"Everybody thinks they are being preventative but are we? What else can people be doing to have better health? We need to find these things out."
After the bike tour, participants were free to ask questions to bike tour organizers about heart health.
