Cobequid falls to Dartmouth, misses Tier 2 banner
TRURO - The Cobequid Cougars waited until their final game to play their best.
But it still wasn't enough to reel in a NSSAF Football League Tier 2 title. The Cougars were nipped 29-28 in overtime Saturday by the Dartmouth Spartans in Burnside.
In spite of the loss, Cougars head coach Jason Williams was happy with what he saw from his players.
"Anytime you lose it's not the result you wanted but I think you can walk away with some satisfaction if you played well," he said. "And I can honestly say our guys played their best game of the year."
The Dartmouth quarterback kicked the ball through the end zone for the single point for the victory after both teams failed to score from the 35-yard line in overtime.
Cobequid battled back from a 21-7 deficit at half to tie the game with 10 seconds left.
"It was a pretty exciting game to be a part of," Williams said.
Running back Jordan Lauther scored a pair of touchdowns and collected 145 yards on 37 carries. Chad Samson also scored a major as did quarterback Gabriel Bagnell.
The loss capped a season in which the Cougars went 4-4 and failed to qualify for Tier 1 playoffs.
Williams is already focused on next year.
"It's never too early to look at next season," he said. "We're definitely happy with some of the things we saw on offence. We have a little more work to do on defence but we always get good kids out in August and we'll be ready to go."
The Citadel Phoenix pounded the Sir John A. Macdonald Flames 45-7 in Sunday's Tier 1 final at Huskies Stadium in Halifax.
