MASSTOWN - A motorist pulls over towards the shoulder of the road and allows a truck, heading in the opposite direction, to drive by.
The lady then pulls her sedan back to the middle of the road to avoid low spots in the pavement.
It is not a seldom-used stretch of highway, either. It's Highway 2 through Masstown, which was once the Trans-Canada Highway.
"Look at this, you call this a road?"
Kelly Densmore asked the Truro Daily News yesterday.
"It's just a matter of time before someone ends up seriously injured or dead," he added. "I just don't want to see anyone get hurt."
Densmore, who has contacted authorities for the past two years with his concerns, said it is a dangerous situation when the holes fill up with water, potentially creating a recipe for disaster due to hydroplaning.
"When other motorists drive in them and you meet them you're getting hit with tons of water and it's really dangerous," he said. "It's like throwing a 50-pound bag of potatoes at someone's windshield driving down the road."
As he is explaining the problems with the road, another example becomes evident as a Chevrolet Cavalier's exhaust scrapes on a high spot of pavement as the car wheels drive in low-lying areas.
But there is some good news on the way.
Colchester North MLA Karen Casey said her office has received numerous complaints regarding the road. Casey and the local Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal office submitted the project to Halifax for approval.
"The tender has been called, the tender has been awarded and the work for that is scheduled to be completed, according to the tender call, by the end of October," she said.
S.W. Weeks Contracting won the $1,891,644 contract. The work will be done in two parts; Highway 2 from McElmon Road to Putnam Road, a total of 3.3 kilometres; and Plains Road from McElmon Road east for 2.4 kilometres.
Densmore is pleased the work is slated to be done but said there are other roads requiring repairs. He said some of them include Belmont Road, Staples Brook Road and Masstown Road.
