Topshee five behind the leader at provincial men’s golf championship

DARTMOUTH – Chris Topshee fired a round of 4-over-par 72 on Friday to fall down the leaderboard at the Nova Scotia men’s amateur golf championship.

The 27-year-old Truro native, who plays out of Oakfield, has a 36-hole score of 139 after shooting 1-under 67 on Thursday at Brightwood Golf and Country Club. He sits tied for ninth place.

Oakfield’s Bradford Curren is the leader. Curren followed an even-par round of 68 on Thursday with a round of 2-under 66 on Friday. His 134 total is one stroke better than Ken Wo’s Ally Tidcombe and Grandview’s Andrew Reid.

Truro’s Paul Coulson shot 7-over 75 yesterday for 148, while clubmate Jeff Van Wart had 8-over 76, also for 148. Coulson and Van Wart are tied for 50th.

The top 60 and ties after two rounds play on the weekend.

Brookfield’s Michael Penny carded a 76 (150) on Friday and missed the cut by one stroke. Other Colchester County players in the field include Truro’s Evan Starratt (78-153) and John Archibald (72-155), Mountain’s Darrick Pettigrew (79-158) and Truro’s Brock Dewar (80-162).

At the provincial women’s championship at Eden Golf and Country Club, Abercrombie’s Julie Henderson won a three-way playoff to claim the title on Friday.

Henderson, clubmate Bernadette Little and Clare’s Mireille LeBlanc finished with 36-hole scores of 9-over 157. Henderson made a 14-foot putt on the fourth playoff hole for the win.

Bible Hill’s Katie Brine, who plays out of Ashburn, finished 14th in the 18-player field.

Oakfield’s Ruth Maxwell set a new women's competitive course record with an even-par 72 on Friday to win the senior women's title by 15 shots over Jean Boudreau of Hartlen Point and Beth Lloyd of Ken-Wo.

Both women’s events were reduced from 54 to 36 holes due to the impending storm.
