TRURO – The Cobequid Educational Centre Cougars were prowling on Tuesday, as they trounced the Hants East Tigers 47-7 in the second last regular-season game of the year.

The Cougars took charge from the get-go, wasting no time digging their heels into the Tigers. A lopsided game after the first half, CEC didn’t let up in the second.

The latter half of the game was all Cougars, with the play coming back over their half of the field sparingly. Hants East managed just one try, late in the second half.

Establishing a rapid pace from the start is something the Cougars have been looking to do all season.

“All year long, we’ve been a second-half team,” said CEC head coach Dan Mosley. “Today though, they started from the very word ‘go,’ from the very first whistle.”

The Cougars, a young team laden with Grade 10 and 11 players, have seen their play on the field pick up the more the season wears on, despite several injuries to key players.

“We have quite a big squad,” Mosley said, gesturing to the abundance of girls in Cougar colours fresh off the field. “We’ve been quite fortunate for that, with the injuries we’ve had this season.”

Leading the offence on the field was Grade 11 player Autumn Smiley, who drove through the Hants East defenders for three tries of her own.

Despite the abundance of scoring, Smiley said it wasn’t her best game.

“I wasn’t playing my position, since we’ve had a lot of girls injured. But we all came together and played really well as a team.”

Coming together as a team is something the Cougars have done well all season, Smiley said.

“We’ve got a really good team chemistry, that’s something that really helps us. We do a lot of things as a team, whether it’s on or off the field.”

Also scoring for the Cougars were Brianna Preston with a pair, and Sarah Keddy, Jecca Mosley and Allison Ellis adding singles.

The Cougars will close out their season on Thursday evening with a home game against Antigonish at the Saints Field, before taking a week off to set its sights on regional playoffs.
