Burgess, Nova Scotia, off to strong start at junior curling nationals

LIVERPOOL - Hilden's Karlee Burgess and Team Nova Scotia head into action today at the Canadian Junior Curling Championships with a 2-1 record in Liverpool.

Nova Scotia takes on Northern Ontario's Krysta Burns (1-1) at 2 p.m. before meeting Veronica Smith of P.E.I. (1-2) at 6:30 p.m. Nova Scotia is second in Pool B behind Ontario's Molly Greenwood (3-0).

The event is being held at the Liverpool Curling Club and Queens Place Emera Centre.

Burgess throws second stones for the Chester Curling Club rink skipped by Mary Fay and which also includes Jennifer Smith and Janique LeBlanc.

Nova Scotia suffered a 9-4 setback to Greenwood on Sunday after starting the event with a 5-3 win over Manitoba's Meaghan Brezden (2-1) and a 10-2 thrashing of Newfoundland and Labrador's Sarah Hill (0-2) on Saturday.

Fay held a 4-1 lead after the fifth end on Sunday when the tide turned Greenwood's way. Ontario scored two in the sixth, singles in the seventh and eighth ends and four more in the ninth to win.

The top four teams from each of the two seven-team pools advance to the playoff round after a six-game round robin.
