Belmont resident frustrated with Canada Post decision

To the editor,

The Canada Post Corporation is faced with a huge deficit so they are cutting home delivery of mail, eliminating 8,000 jobs and increasing postage.

Whoever decided this absurd idea is out of their tree.

First of all, reduce the top-heavy brass and managers and then look at home delivery service. Why does it have to be five days a week? Cut it down to two or three days a week. Not only do you keep customers happy, you still provide employment, it is a win-win situation. As employees become eligible for their pension, jobs are eliminated through attrition and also put a freeze on hiring until the jobs and work balances out.

Second, I have a bone to pick with the post office officials. My husband and I are seniors with medical problems and we live in the country. We are required to drive an 8 kilometre return trip to pick up our mail. Why were some community boxes put so far away from our homes? Why was one not put somewhere between Cross Road and the Masstown/Onslow Road. Just for the powers that be, Belmont Road runs between Old Highway 2 and the Village of Belmont, the mailboxes are situated at the other end of Belmont Road, at the far end of the Village of Belmont which is where we are required to drive to retrieve our mail. The Canada Post elite are out of touch with reality, their CEO stated on the Newsnet with reference to seniors “the exercise will do them good.” We wish we could walk like we used to do but it is impossible for us.
