AMHERST – A gas leak in downtown Amherst was quickly contained Tuesday.

"We're about at roughly an hourfrom letting traffic in again and things getting back to normal," Amherst Fire Chief Greg Jones said.

A section of downtown Amherst is closed Tuesday afternoon because of a natural gas leak, with Amherst police and the local fire department blocking traffic and encouraging motorists away from the scene. Heritage Gas also had representatives in the area.

"Heritage Gas was already on the scene working on a different job and were in the down town when contractors broke the line," Jones said. "Luckily they were here and they squeezed the line shut."

It was shortly after 3 p.m the fire department responded to the report a natural gas line was broke on Eddy Street.

One witness, who says she was asked to leave her apartment, says the broken line is in front of her home.

“They were working on the road and hit the natural gas line,” Shawna Fisher said. “I can’t even get into my home now.“
