TRURO - Efforts to sell the former Colchester Regional Hospital are ongoing but so far no deal is in the offing, a local health official says.

Costs for maintaining and securing the former Colchester Regional Hospital in Truro continues to grow, with about $100,000 to $150,000 budgeted for this year for insurance, heat, lights and ground's upkeep.

"We're sort of continuing to work with the province and identify where to go to with disposition of the property," said Peter MacKinnon, executive director of the Colchester East Hants Health Authority. "But nothing really substantive at this point from my end," he said, regarding a potential purchaser for the property.

Rumours have been circulating for some time that the facility had been purchased by Northwood, a company in Halifax that specializes in continuing care and independent living.

However, a representative for the company said the rumours are not based on fact and that Northwood has "no plans" to purchase the property.

"It's not even on our radar," said spokeswoman Tara Dunn. "I don't imagine it ever will be."

In the meantime, costs for maintaining and securing the former hospital continue to grow, with about $100,000 to $150,000 budgeted for this year for insurance, heat, lights and ground's upkeep.

"But the main cost is keeping the building secure, having security there to protect against vandalism and so on," MacKinnon said.

It will be two years on Nov. 25 since the old hospital was closed and during the first year, costs related to the transition and ongoing maintenance of the site had reached about $500,000.

But MacKinnon said efforts have been made to reduce those expenditures.

"We had a little bit higher costs initially but we've trimmed those back by cutting back on the heating and so on," he said.

The only security they need are the Ghosts and the viruses in the building.

Heat, Lights its an abandoned building, shut the water off, drain all pipes and board up the first floor windows. No one with any common sense heats a derelict building, or keeps the light on! This is typical mismanagement by bureaucrats.

Why don't they just pull it down, sure it will cost to do this, but better than putting money into it year after year.Nobody is going to buy it.It would sell as an empty piece of land.
