NORTH SYDNEY – A Cape Breton man is facing a charge of attempted murder in relation to an assault on a former Truro man in North Sydney.

Shawn Kurtis Jack is in a Halifax hospital with serious injuries after being assaulted on Monday in North Sydney.

Shawn Kurtis Jack, 48, was found beaten in the parking lot of a grocery store Monday night and remained in serious condition with head injuries Thursday in a Halifax hospital, according to a police spokesperson.

“Everyone knows him in some way,” said a Truro Daily News reader in an emailed comment. “Whether it’s from seeing him walking with his dog or running into him in the grocery store,” the person said.

Desiree Vassalo, a spokeswoman for the Cape Breton police, said the victim, who did not have a fixed address, is originally from Truro but had been living in the North Sydney area.

Police originally responded to reports of an injured male just before midnight on July 14, where staff at the North Sydney Superstore had located him in their parking lot. Jack, who had been staying in the area, was transported by EHS to Cape Breton Regional Hospital with serious head injuries and later to Halifax for further treatment. He remains in serious condition in the Halifax hospital.

Kyle William Nichol, 25, of Sydney Mines is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and wearing a disguise with intent to commit an offence and two counts of breaching court-ordered conditions. He is to appear in Sydney provincial court today to face the charges.

Jennifer Lynn MacLeod, a 22-year-old woman from Bouladerie, is also charged in the case with aggravated assault and wearing a disguise with intent to commit an offence.

A 16-year-old girl from North Sydney has also been charged with aggravated assault, wearing a disguise and two breaches.

Anyone with additional information about the incident is asked to contact police at 563-5151 or anonymously through CrimeStoppers.

I read this article and I cannot understand why anyone would attack a homeless person! Jack, as a lot of us have meet, was an individual who graciously accepted anything he was given, and who gave unconditional care and love to his dog, Chico! I remember last winter giving him some money, and two hot meals from MacDonald's, and him thanking me profusely! But what even stood out more for me, was that he had his dog, Chico, wrapped in a heavy blanket and he gave his dog one of the hamburgers! A man who truly loved his best friend! The individuals who did this horrific act of violence, are nothing more, nothing less than drains on society. I don't not want to hear the excuses, dysfunctional families, drug addictions etc. These people, consciously went out , put on disguises and beat this man, causing him serious head injuries and placing his life survival in jeopardy The court has to stop giving these individuals and others like them , a green light, one of the females, the older one, had a record, I am sure the male accused , probably has one. The young offender identified has a record, and know should be tried as an adult, she did the crime, know she needs to pay for the crime! All three of these low life individuals, have learnt well, they have learnt that our justice system just gives you a tap on the wrist! Cry, that you are disadvantaged, and you are given a Free go -free card, because you will proclaim, you will change, you will reform, go to school , get a job etc! What a joke! I for one am tired of individuals like this preying on the helpless! For once, Courts and Probation Officers, implement the law! Take off your colored glasses! Hope Jack gets better!
