HALIFAX – Two students from Colchester County are in Halifax until Friday to participate in the Nova Scotia Provincial Heritage Fair.

Alexis Wilson, from North Colchester High School, and Katherine Bentham, a student at Chiganois Elementary School, are two of seven students from within the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board to participate in the fair, held Thursday and Friday.

A total of 14 awards are up for grabs in the 21st annual fair, happening at Saint Mary’s University. Judges will review more than 50 entries and choose the winners who showcased their research in an imaginative way.

“Exploring the province’s diverse culture and heritage will inspire critical thinking and build a foundation of life-long learning in our young people,” said Lena Diab, the province’s justice minister, in a press release on behalf of Communities, Culture and Heritage Minister Tony Ince. Diab is presenting the Communities, Culture and Heritage Minister’s Award on Friday.

“This experience gives our youth a better understanding of what makes this province and country great.”

Other categories include awards for African Canadian, Built, and First Nations heritage projects, as well as Maritime History and Gaelic Identity.

“I want to congratulate all students for their dedication and hard work in preparing for this exciting heritage fair,” said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Karen Casey. “Their commitment to learning and understanding our past provides invaluable insights and information on how to prepare for a bright, strong future."

In addition to presenting projects, students will participate in hands-on archaeology, archival skills and geo-caching workshops presented by Saint Mary's professors and experts from the Nova Scotia Archives.

The public is invited to view student displays and attend the awards ceremony on Friday from 3 to 4:30 p.m., in the student centre cafeteria at the university.
