PICTOU - Women endure many struggles in their lifetime,  arguably the most crucial transition period being adolescence.

Girl Talk, a group for young women between the ages of 16 and 24 in Pictou County, is hosting a fundraising event on May 16 at North Nova Education Centre in New Glasgow, beginning at 6:30 p.m. “A Night of Women and Song” will consist of female entertainment from various backgrounds and talents. The evening will feature a performance from Halifax’s Suneetra Karam Singh as she describres, through classical Indian dance, a woman’s emotions after experiencing sexual abuse.

Stephanie Jacklyn, a youth outreach worker in Pictou, can’t say enough good things about Girl Talk. She said it’s about rebuilding and restoring self-esteem and self-worth and moving on to a more positive and confident road to adulthood.

According to Jacklyn, she’s a survivor of childhood neglect, physical and sexual abuse from her father.

“I have grown up experiencing many struggles and emotions. I have been able to take the negativity and anguish and turn it into a positive movement. I do this by reaching out to young women and assisting them on their road to empowerment, leadership and confidence, to be viewed as equal and live a life of peace and acceptance,” Jacklyn, who will speak at the girls event, said in a news article.

Tickets for Girl Talk include wine and appetizers and are $15. They can be purchased at MacQuarries Pharmasave on the Esplanade in Truro, Roots House, Esso in New Glasgow, The Video Nook in Pictou, Acropole Pizza in Westville, Poulain’s Pharmacy in Stellarton and Ultramar on Hwy. #7 in Antigonish.
