NEW HARRIS — A tractor trailer left the road and crashed into waters near the Seal Island Bridge Saturday afternoon.

A tractor trailer left the road and landed in water near the Seal Island Bridge Saturday afternoon.

RCMP report the crash happened at about 1:45 p.m. when the tractor trailer travelling eastward on the TransCanada Highway 105 went out of control and crashed through a guardrail before settling on its in the water.

The female driver was able to escape the vehicle without assistance but she was later transported to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney for treatment of minor injuries.

Officials from the Department of the Environment, Big Bras d'Or Volunteer Fire Department and the Sydney Mines Volunteer Fire Department were at the scene of the accident for much of Saturday afternoon.

There was also a hazardous materials unit on site as part of measures to contain any diesel fuel that might have been leaking from the vehicle.

The tractor trailer, though, was not carrying any other dangerous goods

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
