‘Go to church, eat healthy and do what you want to do’

LOWER TRURO – Jeanette Brown is preparing to celebrate an astounding milestone next week.

Jeanette Brown of Lower Truro is looking forward to celebrating her 105th birthday with friends and family on April 7. The Wynn Park Villa resident loves sharing stories from the past and offering some advice for a long, healthy life. Monique Chiasson – Truro Daily News

On April 7 the Wynn Park Villa resident will turn 105 years old.

“I wish I was 50 again … that was the best time,” said Brown cheerfully. “I got married for the second time at that age.”

Brown is in good spirits and health, and shared some advice for a long, healthy life.

“Go to church, eat healthy and do what you want to do … don’t be afraid of what people think,” said Brown, adding, “you should work and do the best you can and get an education.”

Brown got her high school diploma through an online course at the age of 63. It was quite an accomplishment because growing up “in those years education was not important for girls because they were only supposed to get married.”

There have been many other milestones for Brown, who recalls them vividly.

“I remember having my first ice cream cone when I was five or six years old,” she said. “And I remember not going to school until I was eight years old, and I was the best at everything.”

By age 16, Brown was married and by age 19 she had given birth to two daughters and a son.

“Then I grew up,” she laughed, adding she held numerous jobs over the years, including working in a defence department in Montreal, being a homemaker, a secretary and working in retail.

Brown also recalls the Great Depression in the 1930s.

“It wasn’t too bad. I remember people talking about eating horse meat but I can’t say I was every hungry or ate that.”

One of the more recent world events that holds a special place in Brown’s heart was Barack Obama being named president of the United States.

“I was excited because he was a black man. I could’ve kissed him if I ever saw him. I didn’t think I’d ever see that happen.”

Jeanette Paris, Brown’s granddaughter, loved hearing her grandmother’s special memories. Paris said her grandmother has always lived life to the fullest.

“She means the world to me. You feel a sense of history from her and you need to pass that on,” said Paris.

“Grandmother’s always been miss prim and proper and always a fashion queen. She is a good grandmother and she’d tell us stories and we couldn’t wait to get to her house. She’s a very loving person.”

Paris said a birthday party for Brown will be held on April 6 at

130 Young St. in Truro beginning at 2 p.m. Close friends and family are encouraged to attend.

I am Eleanor and Carl Jones' daughter from Windsor On. My husband DuWayne and myself was neighbours of Mr. Mrs Brown . We always had a lot of fun with partys and BQ's. We were home last year and her granddaughter Janett took us to see Mrs Brown and she remembered us. We talked about the good times we had. She was funny because she told DuWayne because it has been a long time since she kissed a man we laughed. Had a good visit with her. She was always a beautiful lady and she still is. Happy birthday Mrs. Brown. We will come to see you in Aug. God willing. Love from both of us.
