TRURO - The Step Into Spring program is hoping to more than double its numbers this year attempting to beat last year’s 31 million steps.

Colchester County Council

“This year we hope to reach 500 participants and reach more than 75 million steps. But, we’ll need everyone’s help in achieving this goal,” said Jennifer Richards of Colchester Recreation Services.

She reminded all participants to submit their steps to boost their overall numbers at the end of the eight-week annual event.

While hundreds of people register for the program each year, they all don’t record and submit their step counts.

“By registering you’re taking the first step toward helping us surpass our numbers from last year, “ Richards said. “The next step is to register your steps each week through email or by phone.”

The program encourages participants to increase their physical activity by recording the number of steps they take measured by a pedometer received upon registration.

Registration begins March 24 and the step counting officially runs from March 29 to May 23. The cost is $10 per person. In addition to a pedometer, participants receive a reusable bag, clip-on LED light, walking tips and more.

Participants can also win prizes. Weekly draws begin April 7.

Registration packages are available throughout Colchester County: Colchester Recreation Services, (third floor) 1 Church St.; Truro Parks, Recreation and Culture, Douglas Street Recreation Centre, 40 Douglas St.; Village of Bible Hill, 67 Pictou Rd.; Town of Stewiacke, 295 George St.; and Open Doors, 299 Main St., Tatamagouche.
