‘Everyone has clothes they don’t wear, including some with the tags still on’
TRURO – If you’re a woman in need of some clothes, you might want to head to the local women’s resource centre on Saturday.
The Central Nova Women’s Resource Centre is once again hosting a clothing swap that women and children in the community can take advantage of.
“It was about three years ago around the same time the homeless shelter opened up, we had some women coming in to see if we had any clothes, such as coats,” said Michaela MacLachlan, administrative co-ordinator with the centre. “I thought it would be a great idea to see if people in the community would donate some clothes. Everyone has clothes they don’t wear, including some with the tags still on.”
Between 1 and 4 p.m., women are invited to drop into the centre at 676 Prince Street to see if there is any clothing they would like to take home. Some children’s clothes, household items, shoes, purses and jewelry will also be available.
“Women can come in and take what they need, because obviously there is a need for it,” said MacLachlan. “People don’t have to have donated anything to come and get some clothes.”
Throughout the years the centre has been hosting clothing swaps, MacLachlan said there has been great turnout from both donations and those picking up items.
“One person brought in a whole truck load of clothes … I mean the entire back of a pickup truck was full,” she said, adding at the last swap there were about 50 to 60 women at the centre throughout the afternoon for the event.
“People were leaving with bags and bags of clothing. And anything that we have leftover, we deliver to the New To You store so they can try and make a profit off of it.”
MacLachlan said the swap is a great way for people to recycle items and help out those in need.
“People do like to donate items for someone else to have for free,” she said. “Especially kids’ clothing, which is hard to come by as well.”
If she could, MacLachlan would like to keep a stock of clothing on hand for any women that drop into the centre requesting it.
“But we just don’t have the room. We’d like to hold the swaps quite often, but we don’t have the storage to hold all the clothes,” she said.
Anyone wishing to donate items can still do so until Friday at 4:30 p.m.
