RCMP ID sledgehammer and pipe as weapons

YARMOUTH - The RCMP have identified the weapons used in what they are describing as a violent robbery in Yarmouth as having been a sledgehammer and a pipe.

Around 12:15 a.m. Feb. 16, the RCMP responded to the aftermath of an alleged Feb. 15 robbery on Tooker Street. The police say a 46-year-old man was left with serious injuries as a result of the incident. An RCMP member on patrol came across the man.

“He was on the road, bleeding, and some people were assisting him,” said RCMP Cpl. Jennifer Clarke. “The RCMP member had EHS dispatched.”

Cpl. Clarke said there were no weapons on the scene when the RCMP attended to the man. He was transported to Yarmouth Regional Hospital where he was treated for serious injuries and released.

Court documents say the man’s wallet was stolen.

Six men were arrested by the RCMP with charges being laid against three.

Charged are 18-year-old Ronald Dempsey Higby, 21-year-old Desi Thomas Sisco and 22-year-old Trevor Joseph Jacquard, all from Yarmouth.  They have been charged with several offences including robbery and assault causing bodily harm.

The three men appeared in provincial court in Yarmouth on Monday.

Higby was released on a $500 non-cash surety and is due back in court for election and plea on April 15. He is charged with using violence to steal a wallet. While on release he is not permitted to have any contact with the victim or co-accused and must also abide by a curfew, in addition to other court-ordered conditions.

Jacquard was remanded by consent in custody and is due back in court on Feb. 18. He is facing five charges, which includes assault causing bodily harm, using a lead pipe to commit an assault and stealing a wallet from the victim while armed with a lead pipe. He also faces two breaches of a previous probation order.

Sisco was released on a $500 non-cash surety and is due back in court on Feb. 18 for election and plea. He is charged with three offences, which include assault causing bodily harm, committing an assault with a sledgehammer and stealing a wallet while armed with a sledgehammer.

The police say this was not a random incident as the victim and the men who have been arrested are all known to each other.

“Everyone was known to each other - no one needs to be concerned that this might happen to them in their neighbourhood,” said Cpl. Clarke. “This was definitely between this group of people.”

Cpl. Clarke said the RCMP were not seeking the public’s assistance in the matter.

“Not at all,” she says. “We have what we need. The statement from the victim was what we were after.”
