BIBLE HILL – Village of Bible Hill officials are taking another step towards the potential solution to pedestrian and traffic issues on a busy road in the community.

Another step taken to address pedestrian, traffic issues in Bible Hill

“The Vimy/College crosswalk is the top item on the sidewalk work list,” said Bob Christianson during the village’s regular monthly meeting Tuesday night. “If we are going to proceed in the upcoming fiscal year … (we should) begin the engineer design now.”

The village is considering constructing a new pedestrian sidewalk, along the north side of College Road to the existing crosswalk just beyond the Dalhousie University Agricultural Campus MacRae library. This plan is being considered because the Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Department has refused a controlled pedestrian crossing at the Vimy and College road intersection.

“It will not be easy and it will be expensive; that’s why it hasn’t been done,” said Christianson of the back-up plan.

It’s estimated it will cost $10,000 to survey the cost of the potential project, which would span 300 to 400 metres. A legal survey and design of the area is needed and an easement from Dalhousie University would be needed.

“The (Dal AC) library would have to be cut back and we’d need the right of way by the international house,” advised Christianson.

“If Dal refuses, the project would stop.”

If the project continues, a tender for work could go out in April or May with construction targeted for July or August.

Village commissioner Sharon McLean said progress soon has to be made.

“It’s one of the most dangerous spots in Bible Hill because it’s deceiving,” McLean said.

Commissioner Dale McLeod said the situation must be addressed despite that fact there is “not an easy or cheap way out of it.”
