TRURO – A Valley man facing murder charges in the death of his common-law wife and her daughter is to return to court Feb. 10 to set a date for a preliminary hearing.

Accused murderer Gerald Rushton hides his head after being escorted from the provincial court building in Truro Wednesday afternoon following a brief hearing to set a preliminary inquiry date.

Gerald Rushton, 47, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder after the bodies of Elizabeth MacPherson, 53 and Brittney MacPherson were discovered in the elder woman’s home on Pictou Road on Dec. 27.

Rushton, who was transported to hospital in serious condition with a self-inflicted injury after police arrived at the murder scene, appeared in court with a gauze bandage on his left wrist, has been remanded into custody until his next hearing.
