TATAMAGOUCHE - Homeowners and businesses in the Tatamagouche area are encouraged to turn on their holiday lights and show off their decorating talents.

A panel of five judges will be touring the area on the weekend, including the village and surrounding communities, and will be looking for homes and businesses that stand out thanks to their décor. One of them will be named the best decorated.

“It’s a pretty good response so far,” said Jim Baird, Tatamagouche Village Commission chairman. “It’s for bragging rights, really.”

This is the second year for the home and business-decorating contest, which is hosted by the commission. Last year, winners were selected from within the village limits, but this time, with the added support of Colchester County Coun. Mike Gregory, the contest has been expanded to include surrounding communities.

Baird said there are five local merchant prizes to be awarded. Judges will be looking at creativity, theme, use of decorations and other appealing qualities of the displays.

“We’ve told them to just go out and see what they can see,” he said. “We’re hoping this year we are to get a bigger cross-section with different tastes.”

He said there is no formal process to enter the contest to qualify for judging but if someone resides in a remote area away from popular roadways, they are invited to call one of the commission members or the local councillor to be added to the list for judges to view.

The judges will each pick their top 10 homes and top five businesses.

“From that we cross-reference and there should be enough common ones to determine winners,” said the chairman.

Baird said winners would be announced on Monday.
