Literacy Nova Scotia’s 2013-14 Scholarship and Bursary Award recipients
TRURO – A student at the NSCC Truro campus has been named as a recipient in this year’s Literacy Nova Scotia Scholarship and Bursary Awards.
“I ran out of furnace oil the week my bursary cheque arrived,” said Betty Lee Legere, a $500 recipient who is completing Grade 12 at the Truro campus. “I used some of my bursary money to fill the oil tank and heat my house.”
Determined to improve life for herself and her family, Legere plans to earn a degree in business and accounting. And she said the adult learning path she has embarked upon has helped her do something meaningful with her life.
“I never thought I could accomplish as much as I have.”
The scholarship and bursary awards were presented at Literacy Nova Scotia’s (LNS) annual general meeting held recently in Dartmouth.
“The scholarship and bursary award presentation is always the highlight of our AGM,” said LNS executive director Jayne Hunter. “It’s not every day that we have the opportunity to hear directly from adult learners about their challenges and their determination to succeed in their learning journey.”
Other recipients included $1,500-award winner Shelby Priscilla Moore, who earned her Grade 12 with honours from the Adult Learning Program at NSCC Pictou and $500 winner Bryanna Josiah who will graduate from the same campus with her Grade 12 in 2014.
“The scholarship and bursary awards can make the difference between continuing in a learning program and dropping out,” Hunter said. “It’s important to support learners on their journey.”
With funds raised at the NSPGI Golf Tournament for Literacy, Literacy Nova Scotia gives scholarships and bursaries to learners who are in adult learning programs, or have completed a program and are continuing on to post-secondary education.
