The provincial education minister has asked school boards across Nova Scotia to halt all school reviews for 2013-14 – and delay any school closings approved for 2012-13.

A release from Ramona Jennex states the boards have been asked to suspend the review process because a new process is being developed.

“We are hearing from parents and families that recent changes to the school-review process didn’t go far enough, so we need to develop a more collaborative process,” states Jennex in the release.

Jennex goes on to say the review process is in need of a “major overhaul,” and boards, communities and other stakeholders will be invited to help develop a new process.

A discussion paper will be ready this fall and the new process is expected to be in place by next spring.

It is no surprise that the provincial NDP party is halting the school review process in light of an upcoming election. The political posturing for votes and increased popularity has begun with this and other recent announcements.
