Many in favour of the move to a Saturday event

TRURO - For the first time in known history, the exhibition parade will be held on Saturday.

"One of the reasons we took it to Saturday was because a lot of the people in these parades are volunteer bands or volunteer groups in the community so it's easier for them to come on a Saturday," said spokesperson Roy Publicover.

"When they used to have the parade on Tuesday night a lot of people couldn't go because they didn't get off work in time."

And Publicover said given the 72 entries signed up for this year's parade, participants appear to be solidly in favour of the change. Last year's parade had about 45 entries, he said.

"What we're trying to do is build it into a better parade that people will like."

This year's entries include antique cars and trucks, including a 1925 Ford truck, antique tractors, horses and wagons, a funny looking Shriner's entry (which boasts of a car made from two front ends), gymnasts, miniature horses, army cadets, 4-H club entries, the world seniors women's curling championship team of Colleen Pinkney and a whole lot more.

"So, we're really excited about it. We're trying to make it a more family-, kids-oriented parade," Publicover said.

The parade lines up at the Colchester Legion Stadium parking lot at noon and begins at 1 p.m. The route runs up Lorne Street, left at Prince, left at Walker and onto Main Street where it will proceed to Ryland Avenue before entering the Exhibition grounds.
